A polyimide foam is prepared by heating a mixture comprising an alkyl ester of 4,4'-oxydiphthalic acid and a diamine at a temperature of 60.degree.
A process for the preparation of a polyimide foam, characterized by heating a polyimide precursor comprising an alkyl ester of 4,4'-oxydiphthalic acid and a diamine as the main components at a temperature of 60.degree.
By this heating, the polyimide precursor is condensed and the alcohol and water generated by the condensation and the vapor of the lower alkyl alcohol present in the precursor each act as a blowing agent.

A preferred composition is one consisting essentially of the acetylene-terminated polyimide oligomer and about 1 to 20 weight percent of the additive, i.e., trinitriloacetonitrile, based upon the weight of the polyimide oligomer.

 Atomic layer deposition of polyimide thin films
Polyimide thin films are attractive materials due to their resistance towards high temperatures, mechanical stress and various chemicals.
We have demonstrated surface-controlled ALD-type growth of several polyimide thin films at 160 °C. Surface reactions between these precursors produce water that can be easily removed under reduced pressure during the ALD cycling.
Based on the success of the present work, the properties of polyimide thin films can be tailored, since there is wide selection of different functional diamines and dianhydrides.

We have examined the effects of molecular weight, chemical composition, and interphase structure on the dissolution behavior of polyimides on silicon substrates.
The dissolution rate of partly cured polyimides was found to depend strongly on the above parameters, and showed distinct regions of behavior.
A method was developed to quantify the chemical adhesion during etching of polyimides.

Therefore, the demand for well-defined and well-characterized oriented polyimides has initiated intensive studies of polyimide thin film preparation methods, as well as characterization approaches of resultant chain structures and their material properties.
In our study of polyimide thin films, particular attention was focused on characterizing the effects of imidization parameters on material properties and nano-structures of biphthalic dianhydride (BPDA/PPD) polyimide.
Increasing this temperature enhances chain mobility resulting in a phase transition of the polyimide in which the observed chain morphologies range from quasi-ordered to amorphous.
