Topic: Polymoog

  PolyMoog
It transpires that the underlying technology behind the PolyMoog was, in fact, the 'divide-down' oscillators employed on organs and string synths of the era.
Whereas the Polymoog sounded thin and weak, was compromised with respect to the filter and was thoroughly unreliable, the CS80, on the other hand, sounded truly magnificent, had two complete synths for each of its voices without compromised filter articulation and was considerably more reliable....
At this point, the PolyMoog was relegated to the 'bargain basement' in stores and classified ads and the original owners were left with an unreliable heap of electronics.

Though it may not sound as good as other analog poly-synths of the time (from ARP and Siel) the Polymoog was still a popular instrument because of a great new keyboard and the ability to edit the presets into unique and wild analog sounds.
It should be noted that the Polymoog and Polymoog Keyboard are not true polysynths, but that they use a similar 'divide-down' circuitry arrangement like certain string synths, combo organs, etc. This causes some of the sonic shortcomings of this unit.
Also, the Polymoog is rather unreliable and prone to breakdown; used specimens are often found with problems w/o servicing prior to resale.

Analog synthesizer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Polymoog was an attempt to create a truly polyphonic analog synthesizer, with sound generation circuitry for every key on the keyboard.
However, its architecture resembled an electronic organ more than a traditional analog synthesizer, and the Polymoog was not widely imitated.
In 1978, the first microprocessor-controlled analog synthesizers were created by Sequential Circuits.

This is the keyboard (preset) version of the awesome Polymoog and has little except curio value now.
The Polymoog keyboard is musically engineered to give you the tonal variety and breadth of expression of a primary keyboard.
Polymoog polyphony is not restricted-either by the number of notes playable simultaneously or by the size of the 71 note keyboard (er....not sure how they work that one out?

Cars (song) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The recording features a conventional rock rhythm section of bass guitar and drums, however the rest of the instruments used are analog synthesizers, principly the Minimoog (augmenting the song's recognisable bass riff) and the Polymoog Keyboard, providing austere synthetic string lines over the bass riff.
Towards the end of the video, a multitude of Gary Numans are depicted 'driving' along a Polymoog keyboard.
The song was also heavily sampled in the 2000 song "Koochy" by Armand van Helden, which reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart.

 DARK SIDE OF THE MOOG
But it wasn't until you selected the Res (Resonator) and VCF modes that the Polymoog finally revealed its user-programmable filters, either of which could be assigned to the Upper and/or Lower zones.
The Polymoog's CV and Trigger outputs controlled external monosynths such as the Micromoog and Minimoog, and there were a host of other options, including three inputs that allowed you to pass an external sound source through the Resonators and the VCF.
The Polymoog's confusing nomenclature used the word 'mode' in two distinct ways: firstly, to describe the eight sound types selectable; and, secondly, to describe the four output modes -- Mode, Direct, Res, and VCF -- available.

 Synthmuseum.com - Moog : Polymoog
Highly popular when it came out, the Polymoog is a preset, polyphonic synthesizer with a 71-note (E-D), touch-sensitive keyboard that is splittable three ways.
In addition to a main volume slider, the Polymoog has volume sliders for each of the 3 keyboard sections.
It also features a 3-band graphic EQ section, and an extensive filter modulation section, allowing it to be modulated by its own LFO, sample-and-hold, and envelope sliders, with variable keyboard tracking.

Top guy, wish I had friends like that that would give you a polymoog.
I actually remember a guy who lived in my old neighborhood who had a real, functioning polymoog (way back in 1982, I think) and he let me play on it for a bit.
Thats not broken, thats what Polymoogs really sound like....

These are for the Polymoog Synthesizer, not the Polymoog Keyboard.
Simply engaging the PITCH button on the Polypedal shifts the Polymoog so far off key that the front panel TUNE control can't even bring it back.
Meanwhile, the Polymoog has an input for controlling modulation depth, which is much more useful, IMHO.

The typical set-up for the basic tracks is as follows: drums, bass, piano or Polymoog, electric guitar, two or more ambience mics and one or two mics for the cue vocals.
The Polymoog's got its own balanced line output so I use that, sometimes with a miked amp as well.

If you listen to some of the Numan tracks on The Pleasure Principle album, you can clearly hear that the filters are not of the standard lowpass variety, but instead have a middy, resonant, almost vocal quality to them.
This was one of the more unique properties of the Moog Polymoog synth, which had a relatively elaborate filter system.
The Polymoog was well suited to this effect, as its unique voicing architecture gave it unlimited polyphony.

i own fourteen polymoogs so i know them well.vox humana is unique, synths of today all fail to copy the sound.
Apparently, the instrument was fully polyphonic in its Preset and Direct modes, but if you attempted to program your own patches, the single programmable filter meant that the synth couldn't shape the frequency characteristics of any new notes if previous notes were still depressed.
As a result, the Polymoog often sounded more like enhanced string ensembles such as the Korg PE1000 and ARP Omni than like later generations of polysynths (those last couple of sentences quoted directly from the SOS article).

Klaatu Track Facts by John Woloschuk
The basic bed tracks for this song were recorded on April 20, 1981 and consisted of a Polymoog synthesizer keyboard accompanied by an electronic drum simulator (used as a reference click track).
Real drums were later overdubbed onto the master tape, replacing the simulated drums which were subsequently erased.
An alternate mix of this track (on which the girls can be heard giggling after the end of the song) appears on Klaatu's "Sunset" CD, released by Bullseye Records of Canada.

The drum break was then re-recorded over the newly elongated section.
In April 1977, the band acquired a Moog polymoog synthesizer (one of the first in Canada and at the time considered to be state-of-the-art technology).
This versatile keyboard was used extensively on this track to embellish the previously recorded orchestral instrumentation.

In the first place, the polymoog uses very little modular technology.
And in the second place, I'm sure that I would have remembered a modular system like the one in the photo if Luce was using it as the basis of his Polymoog design.
The Minimoog or Polymoog designs did not "evolve" from the "technology" of the pictured modular system.

Pc2x Master Slider Dims Lights - Sonikmatter
I dread bringing this in to my repair guy - I am always bringing in a kurweil - even he's scratching his head wondering why I have so many problems with them.
As for using non Kurzweil parts in the unit - I didn't even think that that was possible - I mean isn't all of the guts of the unit kurzweil parts - speaking of the digital stuff not the keybed and sliders.
I have no idea what the parts that the repair shop needs - I could find out if you think you could get them - they are still diagnosising the problem - it may be with the digital power supply - but I am not sure.
