  Acipenser brevirostrum
Though the Paddlefish (Polyodontidae) is exclusively freshwater, it is systematically located in the same order as the sturgeon due to several internal and external characters.
The sturgeons, in general, have also been compared with sharks due to many of the same characters shared with Polyodontidae: spiracles, heterocercal caudal fin, largely scaleless body, and a spiral valve intestine.
The two families that make up the order Acipenseriformes, Acipenseridae and Polyodontidae, presumably deviated from each other during the Jurassic time period, and share a number of these primitive traits.

 Worldwide Polychaete Family List
An alphabetical list of all known families, their current status, with an indication of salient features or affinities, and also example genera.
A few families, for example Arabellidae, Polyodontidae, have comparatively recently changed names or been subsumed into other families, and these old names are included here for easy cross-reference.
Major families (20 or more species) are tagged with a double asterisk.

 Sturgeon Books
This volume presents a synthesis of basic biological and conservation data for all species of sturgeons (Acipenseridae), paddlefishes (Polyodontidae) and their fossil allies in the order Acipenseriformes.
Since the Jurassic, the four families of sturgeon-like fish have been restricted to the Holarctic, where until very recently they flourished in most major river systems.
Recent evidence from fossil Acipenseriformes strongly supports a sister-group relationship of Acipenseridae and Polyodontidae as the suborder Acipenseroidei.
