Topic: Polyphontes

Preface - Merope - Matthew Arnold, Book, etext
And Polyphontes reigned in his stead, he, too, being of the family of Hercules; and he had for his wife, against her will, Merope, the widow of the murdered king.
Merope is driven, by fear for her son’s safety, to consent to marry Polyphontes, although his full guilt is now revealed to her; but she is saved by her son, who slays the tyrant in the manner told in the tradition and followed by Maffei.
The suspicion is confirmed by the appearance of a girdle recognized by Merope as having belonged to her son; as it was confirmed in Maffei’s piece by the appearance of a ring, in Voltaire’s, by that of a coat of armour.

As Cresphontes' government for the most part was directed in favour of the people, the rich made a revolution, killing him and all his sons except Aepytus 2.
Polyphontes 3 came to the throne of Messenia after Cresphontes, and married, against her will, the wife of the murdered man. But he was later killed by Aepytus 2, who became king, being afterwards succeeded on the throne by his descendants Glaucus 8, Isthmius 2, and Dotadas.
During the rule of Dotadas, son of Isthmius 2, the harbour at Mothone in Messenia was constructed.

 Myth and the Time Spirit
Perfection of a certain kind may there be attained, or at least approached, without knocking yourself to pieces, but to attain or approach perfection in the region of thought and feeling, and to unite this with perfection of form, demands not merely an effort and a labour, but an actual tearing of oneself to pieces...
Polyphontes, as has been said, is the true protagonist; and Merope's half-sympathetic efforts to understand him give the play such complexity and depth of meaning as it possesses.
and Polyphontes may be accepted as illustrating this "sentiment of sublime acquiescence"; but such is the tone of the poems that the reader is little inclined to assent to so much innocent suffering.

 Apollodorus on the Oedipus Myth
On hearing that, and believing himself to be the son of his nominal parents, he left Corinth, and riding in a chariot through Phocis he fell in with Laius driving in a chariot in a certain narrow road.
And when Polyphontes, the herald of Laius, ordered him to make way and killed one of his horses because he disobeyed and delayed, Oedipus in a rage killed both Polyphontes and Laius, and arrived in Thebes.
III.5.8 Laius was buried by Damasistratus, king of Plataea, and Creon, son of Menoeceus, succeeded to the kingdom.

In this account the Herakleid Polyphontes killed Kresphontes, became king of Messene, and married the widow Merope against her will.
She sent away her infant son Aipytos to be raised in Aitolia, but Polyphontes suspected that the child was alive and offered a great reward to whoever would kill him.
At the last second a servant recognized Aipytos; he was reunited with his mother, killed Polyphontes while he was sacrificing, and was declared the rightful king.

A relatively obscure pun, but surely suitable for the aenigmatic subject-matter of the announcement.
