		Alaskan populations of Steller's Eiders (Polysticta stelleri) and Spectacled Eiders (Somateria fischeri) have undergone drastic declines during the recent decades, and in the 1990s both species were listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.
		Intensive studies have been conducted to identify the causes for the declines and to determine management actions needed to reverse the trend and aid in the recovery of the populations.
		Selenium concentrations that are commonly considered toxic for freshwater birds have been reported in tissues of some marine birds, and the threatened spectacled eider (Somateria fischeri) and Steller's eider (Polysticta stelleri) are among the Alaskan sea ducks and waterfowl found with high selenium levels.
