Schnittke argued that polystylistic elements had existed throughout the history of music, but "subconsciously", in variations or parodies where borrowed material was clearly recognizable.
These elements were equally to be found in theater, in opera and in symphonic music, in their dramatic contrasts or in their less obvious stylistic hints and allusions.
The polystylistic approach becomes more and more important in the twentieth century because of the tendency to broaden musical and stylistic space, to create a wider view embracing all centuries.

Alfred Schnittke - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Schnittke's early music shows the strong influence of Dmitri Shostakovich, but after the visit of the Italian composer Luigi Nono to the USSR he took up the serial technique in works such as Music for Piano and Chamber Orchestra (1964).
The first concert work to use the polystylistic technique was the Second Violin Sonata, Quasi una sonata (1967-1968), but the influence of Schnittke's film work on his stylistic development is shown by the fact that much of the music of this work was derived from a score for the film Glass Accordion.
He continued to develop the polystylistic technique in works such as the epic First Symphony (1969-1972) and First Concerto Grosso (1977), but also composed more stylistically unified works such as the Piano Quintet (1972-1976), written in memory of his recently deceased mother.

The decay and deconstruction of form are the basic ideas behind the compositional method of Alfred Schnittke, according to the introduction to an article in the periodical "Das Orchester" (current issue 1/2003) - an article well worth reading.
Maria Kostakeva attempts to delineate what is really of consequence in Schnittke's so-called "polystylistic method" in her essay "Die Explosion des Museums" (The Explosion of the Museum, pp.
"The polystylistic method," she concludes, "is the expression of Schnittke's artistic world view.

Guardian Unlimited Arts | Arts critics | Feature: In celebration of composer Alfred Schnittke
Doubts about the authenticity of a voice, are for him another level of play: what he called his "polystylistic" voice.
Certain of Schnittke's spiritual preoccupations, such as his dabblings in the occult, in the I-Ching (like John Cage), in anthroposophy (though he said he could never trust a man with eyes like Rudolf Steiner's), culminated in his indecision as to whether to join the Catholic or the Russian Orthodox churches.
Schnittke, half Jewish, his parents and grandparents atheists, a German Russian who spent much of his post-war childhood in Vienna, was a polystylistic man. He was led to the spiritual.

SCHNITTKE Concerto No.3 for Violin and Chamber Orch [SHJ]: Classical Reviews- August 2001 MusicWeb(UK)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
His pieces are not instantly accessible - their eclecticism can be disconcerting - but his fragmented use of many familiar forms and stylistic ideas is easy to follow (the concerto and sonata on this disc both remain rooted strictly in a classical form).
However, these polystylistic structures are complicated further by Schnittke's flexible 20th-century approach to tonality - these in turn causes the harsh dissonances that are at first apparent.
An enforced struggle between harmony and disharmony ensues; this is Schnittke's metaphor for the conflict between the musical styles of the past and present respectively, and it is significant that the sonata never finds a conclusive centre in one tonality or another.

Mandy Patinkin is made to draw on his full repertory of shticks and gives a wildly over-the-top characterization of the vaudeville clown Burrs, while Toni Collette (an Oscar nominee for The Sixth Sense), playing his unhappy lover Queenie who throws this mother of all parties, plays against him with toxic, combustible energy.
His racy musical is based on a 1928 poem about one night of escalating decadence, through which LaChiusa stages a brilliant, savage, polystylistic unmasking of the lies we live by.

Elliott Schwartz himself says: 'The time is ripe for an unprecedented outpouring of post-modernist, collage-orientated polystylistic music' and he goes on to give reasons.
These include the availability of recordings of music of all possible types, cultures and periods; the habit listeners now have of frequently hearing music in disconnected chunks through channel switching and search buttons; and the influence of composers such as Ives, Berio, Stockhausen and Schnittke and, in more recent American music, Rochberg, Foss and Bolcom.
Rochberg refers to the impact of his polystylistic works such as the Third Quartet (1973): 'Throughout I've managed to give modernism and modernists a real hard time, especially...

Traditional bluegrass is itself a fusion music, constructed by Bill Monroe in the late 30's out of country, gospel, jazz and the blues, and since his time it has assimilated a variety of other sources.

His abandonment of the reigning dogma of post-war Europe was an inspiration to a whole generation that has sought freedom of action.
Most of his music is characterized by polystylistic construction: radically different compositional styles, drawn from centuries of music history, coexist in the same composition.
Schnittke's piece is not, however, imitation Mahler, but an embodiment of the great Austrian's aesthetic, using his thematic material.

Before their disintegration in 1987 (when Slava Ganelin emigrated to Israel), the Trio enjoyed a measure of acclaim in Europe during the mid- to late-1980s, but never made significant inroads to the minds of US jazz audiences.
For the record, the Ganelin Trio does not play free jazz, though they use group improvisation as one of a vast array of musical processes which may take place within the framework of their lengthy, polystylistic suites.
Things start off with a bang: Ganelin’s synthesizer sputtering like a malfunctioning CD player, Tarasov massaging his drums and cymbals, and Chekasin eliciting otherworldly wailings from 2 saxophones played simultaneously.

Let's be blunt: only a real Zornie will go for this lavish 7CD boxset.
The brutal cut-ups and dislocations that later become Zorn's polystylistic calling cards are here present throughout, though on the surface of the music: the organic "development-climax-decay" schema so characteristic of much free improvisation these past few years is here conceptually (and hence musically) impossible due to the complex permutations of the "score".
Worth mentioning though, and also touched upon in Coleman's text, is the extent to which Zorn's compositional technique was influenced by earlier generations of experimental composers, notably Cage, Wolff, Brown, Braxton and-crucially-Kagel.
