POLYSTYRENE AND FOIL CAPACITOR SPECIFICATION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The voltage shall be applied to each capacitor through its individual current-limiting resistor as determined from the formula R = 0.025/C, where C is the nominal capacitance in farads and R is in ohms.
The capacitor body shall be rigidly mounted by the entire body length to the vibration test fixture.
Capacitors shall be visibly examined for evidence of mechanical damage.

Application Guide - Power Factor Correction Capacitors
Capacitors are used in one of three basic ways: (1) as a means of discriminating between higher and lower AC frequencies, (2) a method of storing or releasing energy, and (3) as a method of discriminating between AC and DC.
By definition, a bypass capacitor is a device employed to conduct an AC current around a component or group of components, and it must offer negligible opposition to the frequencies being bypassed.
In this type of application, the capacitor is used as a temporary storage cell until the time constant is reached or, in a sample and hold circuit, until the next sample is taken.

  Electrochemistry Encyclopedia --- Electrochemical capacitors
In order to describe "electrochemical capacitors" and to explain their function and applications, it is necessary first to consider the nature of an ordinary electrostatic capacitor or a "condenser" as it used to be called, and thence the meaning of the term electrical capacitance.
The capacitance of a capacitor is proportional to the area of the contact plates and the dielectric constant of the medium between the plates, and it is inversely proportional to the separation between the plates (see the Appendix).
Electrochemical capacitors are a special kind of capacitor based on charging and discharging the interfaces of high specific-area materials such as porous carbon materials or porous oxides of some metals.

Polarity: Capacitors that may be safely operated with only one DC polarity are called "polar" Capacitors which can be operated without regard to polarity are "non-polar".
Coupling Capacitors: Capacitors are often used to block different DC voltages in successive stages of audio equipment.
This function requires the capacitor to have low leakage, low to moderate self inductance, and to be able to handle the AC and DC levels involved.

Most capacitor types require that air and moisture are sealed out to prevent degradation or contamination of the dielectric and corrosion of the metal film.
Film-foil capacitors are made of alternating layers of plastic film and metal foil, while metallized film capacitors have the metal vacuum deposited directly on the film.
Ceramic capacitors are especially suitable for surface mounting due to their heat resistance, mechanical integrity, and the ability to make them in very small packages at low cost, for portable equipment.

This spec is mostly applied to capacitors that deal with AC currents, or DC caps with large AC components (often found in switch mode power supplies, and industrial equipment such as motor drives etc.).
Pushing the capacitor beyond its ratings (either voltage, polarity, or ripple current) will increase the pressure in the cap until it either vents (and loses electrolyte) or explodes.
Polystyrene caps cannot tolerate high temperatures (85 degrees Celsius max.), so they are not available in the metallized variety.
