Pom-Pom (gun) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first gun to be called a pom-pom was the 37 mm Nordenfelt-Maxim introduced during the Second Boer War, the smallest artillery piece of that war.
It was a 40 mm calibre gun with a water-cooled barrel and a Vickers-Maxim mechanism.
Although these were 2-pounder guns they were not the same 2-pounder gun as that used by the British Army as an anti-tank weapon.

The so-called 'Pom-Pom' gun primarily saw service during the 1899-1902 South African War.
Highly successful in the 1899-1902 war - and first used by the Boers before it was copied by the British - the gun was little used during the First World War, chiefly being used as a light anti-aircraft weapon by the latter.
A "pal's battalion" was comprised of soldiers raised in the same locality with the promise they would serve with their friends for the duration of the war.

The gun could fire both single-shots and semiautomatic fire, in automatic-mode the gun kept firing as long as foot-pedal was hold down and ammunition was fed in.
The gun was not only ahead of its time in some areas, but it appeared in right place at the right time - there was a gap between effective range and firepower of 20-mm automatic guns and heavy antiaircraft-guns in 1930's.
Besides the eight guns already installed to Ilmarinen and Väinämöinen the other six guns were used to arm three Finnish ice-breakers (Jääkarhu, Voima and Sisu) and the remaining two guns were installed to gunboats Uusimaa and Hämeenmaa.

The report states that the 75mm field guns were initially issued with 2 000 rounds per gun, ‘of which 500 were case shot which were never, or rarely used’, the case shot being ‘almost always abandoned in the retreats’.
Case shot was, however, produced in South Africa for the Boer guns, and the McGregor Museum’s specimen comprises a zinc projectile, as described in the report, fitted with a Krupp brass cartridge case.
The last mentioned was a zinc projectile, with wood base, filled with lead balls (12mm diameter for the 75mm field guns, 15mm for the 155mm Creusot ‘Long Tom’ compared with average diameter of 12,7mm (0,5in) of British shrapnel used with 12pr and 15pr guns).
