Pomare IV inherited the Ra'iatea chiefdom in 1857.
In 1815 Pomare II regained his power in Tahiti, for a time the missionaries made good progress and a printing press was established (1817), and coffee, cotton and sugar were planted (1819); but soon there came a serious relapse into heathen practices and immorality.
Queen Pomare, advised by the English missionary and consul, Pritchard, refused her consent, and removed by force two priests who had landed surreptitiously and to whom many of the opposition party in the state had rallied.

Pomare V had one son and two daughters.

Once she became Queen Pomare Vahine FV she was to be the most illustrious sovereign Tahiti had ever known and reigned over this new society for half a century.
Queen Pomare was outraged by this attack on her sovereignty and complained to the king of France.
Pomare IV ended up by joining the cause, and on 7 January, 1847, they celebrated the signing of the agreement between the local chiefs and the French government.

Pomare II was the first Tahitian to convert to Christianity and he was instrumental in getting the people of Moorea and Tahiti to also become Christians.
After Pomare II died his son, Pomare III, died at the age of six and his 14-year old sister, Aimata, became ruler as Queen Pomare IV.
The tomb was constructed in 1879 for Queen Pomare, however she only resided in it for 12 years, because her son, Pomare V, moved her out so he could have the tomb for himself.
