West Prussia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Thirteen Years' War (1454-1466), the towns of Pomerelia and western Prussia rebelled against the Teutonic Knights and sought the assistance of King Kazimierz IV Jagiellon of Poland.
In the Peace of Toruń in 1466, Pomerellia and western Prussia became the Polish province of Royal Prussia (with several special rights, especially in Danzig), while eastern Prussia remained with the Teutonic Knights, who were reduced to vassals of Poland.
Royal Prussia became part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1569.

In the course of time the Prussian culture became increasingly militaristic and aggressive, and Poland and Pomerellia, both relatively more advanced and wealthier regions, were the victims of choice.
Early in the thirteenth century, the Duke of Masovia was able to halt the attacks on his lands by occupying Culm, a strategic district in a bend of the Vistula River.
As a consequence, it was not difficult for Polish churchmen to persuade Pope Honorius III to summon Christians to join their holy war against the Prussians.

In Mecklenburg that process was begun, but was reversed in 1170 when Duke Henry made Pribislav Prince of Mecklenburg.55 In Pomerania the process, despite concerted attempts by Danes and Poles to take it over, remained in Po~eranian hands.
Vorpammern eventually passed under German control, but the case of Pomerellia resembles more the pattern of Poland than it does that of Slavia.
There the ruling family converted to Christianity before the Q iedlung began and, despite pagan reactions among the people, was able to Christianize its country sufficiently to preserve a separate identity politically.

The results of the Wendish Crusade were theses no land was taken, and the Obodrites received baptism--falsely, said Helmhold.82 A few oppida, such as Malchow, were destroyed, but no place of importance.83 The baptisms were indeed falsely received, and the piracy was not ended.
In the next twenty-two years all of Slavia fell to the Germans, save only Pomerellia, which fell to the Poles.
After so many centuries, it is difficult to believe that the Wendish Crusade did not contribute in some measure to that success.

The Polish version of events goes along the line that Pomerellia, and the Slavic tribes who had lived there, are identical to Poland and the Poles, and therefore it must follow, or so the Polish argument goes; Polish ownership over Danzig is more or less established.

Also in 1181, Vorpommern fell under German rule, following the death in 1180 of Duke Kazimir.
Pomerellia remained independent, however, because its people did not want to be under imperial rule.7 Pribislav was confirmed in his position as Prince of Mecklenburg, and his dynasty ruled until 1918.8
All of Slavia was thrown into disorder by the Lion's demise, and a number of princes sought to expand their power at the expense of the Wends.9 The Danes were the biggest winners, because Denmark possessed greater resources and had a strong leader in Waldemar.
