Pomology, the science of fruit breeding and production, has been an important area of research since the early years of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
In response to this increased interest and activity, USDA established the Division of Pomology in 1886 and named Henry E. Van Deman as chief pomologist.
An important focus of the division was to publish illustrated accounts of new varieties and to disseminate research findings to fruit growers and breeders through special publications and annual reports.

The university's Pomology Program has discovered several chemicals for blossom thinning of apples, plums, and peaches, and fruit growers in Idaho and other states are planning to use these chemicals, which are far less expensive than hand thinning.
The Pomology Program has also been a pioneer in discovering "Retain," which reduces preharvest fruit drop and also extends fruit life and maintains fruit quality in the storage.

Introduction The Pomology Extension Continuing Conference (PECC) is an ongoing conference designed to establish and improve cooperation and coordination between those working in all areas of pomological crop production.
The PECC conference this year opened with internal speakers addressing the combining and reorganizing of the Pomology Department into a larger department incorporating Pomology, Agronomy and Range Sciences, Environmental Horticulture and Vegetable Crops.
