		The Pompton River is suffering from an algae bloom, a growth of tiny organisms that thrive in water high in nutrients primarily from sewage treatment plants and runoff from lawn fertilizers.
		A slow-moving river filled with nutrients, a lack of rainfall, and extremely hot weather are the perfect conditions for an algae bloom, said Angela Cristini, a professor of biology at Ramapo College.
		All of the sewage-treatment plants on the Pompton and Ramapo rivers are meeting the stricter phosphorus standard, said DEP spokeswoman Sharon Southard.

		Pompton Lakes was originally part of Pompton Township, which covered an area from the New York - New Jersey border south to its southwestern boundary along the Wanaque and Pequannock Rivers.

		Higher concentrations of contaminants such as fecal coliform, chloride and sodium are being found in the rivers of the Passaic Basin, according to a new assessment conducted for the state Department of Environmental Protection.
		When river water is pumped into the reservoir to supplement the supply, the levels of potentially harmful chlorine byproducts rise.
		Massive pumps were installed in 1983 to divert water from Two Bridges, where the Pompton and Passaic rivers meet, and a filtration plant was built at the reservoir to treat the water.

		Harriman — In June and July last year, state workers visited nine places on the Ramapo River and caught 90 fish — zapping them with an electric shock — to study mercury levels in their tissues.
		The work was part of a study to see how much mercury has gotten into the river from the grounds of the Nepera Inc. chemical plant, where decades ago, a previous owner had workers regularly dump and burn chemical waste.

		So, although technically it's not a bike path, everybody from dirt bikes to dog walkers are on the trail using it.
		The bridge over the pompton river is safe, but one always has the option of going out to the Newark Pompton Turnpike over the river.

	U.S. Congressman Scott Garrett
		Yesterday, Congressman Scott Garrett called the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Joshua Bolten, to urge him to expedite the review and approval of the funding necessary to complete the Army Corps of Engineers Flood Control Project on the Ramapo River at Pompton Lakes Dam in Oakland, New Jersey.
		Congressman Garrett originally secured all the funding necessary for the completion of the flood control project at Pompton Lakes Dam, but the Army Corps of Engineers reprogrammed over $8 million from the project.
		Unless the funds are restored to the project by March 31, the project will be shelved.
