The quantity and value of pearl shell collected on Ponape and other islands during this period is uncertain, but we do know that towards the end of the century about three tons a year were exported from Ponape.
Ponape was to become the testing ground for this new economic policy, and in 1908 the first of several measures was initiated there in an effort to make the island more productive.
The German reforms, interrupted on Ponape by the Sokehs rebellion, did not have the desired effect of significantly increasing the commercial output of the colony.

Arriving on Ponape, Dick teamed up with his long-time friend, Stan Gajda, an aviation historian and aircraft restorer whose credentials included assisting in the recovery of the remains of nineteen men of Carlson's Raiders that were killed on Makin Atoll in 1942.
Aldis, the Japanese recovered the bodies of five crewmembers, and buried them in a common grave at the crash-site, however the remains of the sixth crewmember could apparently not be located.
He also learned that sometime thereafter, the bodies of the crewmembers were removed from the grave at the crash-site and temporarily re-interred in Kolonia, the primary port village on Ponape, before being repatriated to the United States and buried at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Pohnpei (also spelled Ponape and earlier Bonabee) is one of the islands in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), and is one of the Senyavin Islands.
The FSM's capital Palikir is located on Pohnpei.
The island was a Japanese territory in World War II, Japan having acquired Ponape along with the rest of the Carolines, the Marshalls, and the Marianas (less American-owned Guam) as war reparations from Germany.

Pohnpei (Ponape) flies a blue flag (blue like the UN flag) with six stars (one for each island: Pingelap, Mokil, Ponape, Ngatik, Nukuoro and Kapingamarangi), a wreath of coconut leaves, and a ceremonial cup called a "sakau" cup made from half a coconut shell.
The wreath was different from the current one, and also the shade of blue later changed to the current design (1993) with 11 stars.
Ponape used the flag bearing six stars during 1977-1992 and then Pohnpei (new name) changed number of star from six to eleven in the flag in 1992 to present.

In 1907, Miskatonic University Press published his translation of the Ponape Scripture, a work discovered by Captain Abner Exekiel Hoag in 1734 on the Caroline isle of Ponape.
Found by a diver in 1909 off the coast of Ponape, it came into the possession of the Professor shortly thereafter.
In 1911, he wrote The Prehistoric Pacific in Light of the "Ponape Scripture, arguing the existence of the sunken continent of Mu, citing the colossal stone ruins found on many Pacific islands, similarities between myth-patterns of many widely scattered people of the region, and the Ponape Scripture as supporting evidence.
