Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station National Historic Landmark Nomination
The Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station is located on the northern side of the Ponce de Leon Inlet; bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Halifax River on the west.
The Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse was one of the first in the United States to be designed specifically for the use of the new "mineral oil" (kerosene) as an illuminant.
It was determined the inlet was moving south and by locating the light station on the north side, it should not suffer the same fate as the 1835 tower.
