The inlet where the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse stands today has long been known as one of the most treacherous in the southeast.
The Inlet was explored by Captain Antonio de Prado in 1569 and named "los Mosquitos" because of the large number of insects.
After Florida passed to the control of the United States in 1821, the plantations revived, and the need for a lighthouse at this dangerous inlet was recognized as early as 1822.

Even though the inlet itself did not require a large coastal light, the government determined that a coastal light was needed to fill in the area between St. Augustine and Cape Canaveral.
The area of Mosquito Inlet appeared to be the best place and so on November 15, 1883 the U.S. Government bought ten acres of land on the north side of the inlet for the construction of lighthouse that would serve as both a harbor light and a coastal light.
The land was deeded to the town of Ponce Inlet in 1972 and during the same year the lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

(During the time that Florida was under British control, a beacon and pilot station had been maintained at the inlet.) Unfortunately, the oil for the lamp was never delivered, and soon after the tower was completed a strong storm washed much of the sand from around the base of the tower, weakening it.
The light was deactivated in 1970, and the Coast Guard established a beacon at New Smyrna Beach.
The Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association was founded to assist the town with the restoration and management of the light station.
