A pond is characterized as being a small body of water that is shallow enough for sunlight to reach the bottom, permitting the growth of rooted plants at its deepest point.

Pond plants vary widely, from floating species like duckweed or filamentous algae, to submergent species such as hydrilla that grow within the water column, to strongly-rooted “emergent” species like the cattail.
As the pond ecosystem recovers and water quality improves, the bacteria are deprived of their food source and die back to normal levels.
