Ponder Stibbons - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stibbons' most successful creation is Hex, a magical computer composed of glass tubes full of ants, and other assorted complex systems, such as mice.
It is possible that Ponder Stibbons is named after a 'Mr Stibbons' who taught at Terry Pratchett's secondary school.
Ponder Stibbons and another young wizard Harry Potter seem to look not unalike, but it should be noted that Ponder's presence and looks were published before Harry Potter's.

Hex (Discworld) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stibbons is concerned by these signs that Hex might be alive, but insists that it only thinks it is.
This is much simpler than the original, however; according to Stibbons, Hex is technically a Very Big Thing, while the Braseneck device is barely a Quite Big Thing.
The inspiration for Hex, which evolves through seemingly unexplainable upgrades like extra cheese, a CWL (Clothes Wringer from the Laundry, for crunching numbers and other things) the FTB protocol (Fluffy Teddy Bear) and "small religious pictures" (icons), came from Pratchett`s own early experiments with unfathomable upgrades on his ZX-81.

The Cerdonic TERENCE CORRIGAN Pages - Dream Roles
"Ponder Stibbons was one of those unfortunate people cursed with the belief that if only he found out enough things about the universe it would all, somehow, make sense.
He could deal with most types of mind, but the one apparently operating Ponder Stibbons was of a sort he had yet to find the handles on.
Beyond the few similarities between Ponder and Wellard and his slight resemblance to drawings by Paul Kidby, I strongly believe that Terrence would do a marvelous job of bringing out the subtleties of Ponder's personality that were lost in past attempts to portray him outside of the novels.

 PRATCHETT & EVOLUTION
On pages 26 and 27 Ponder Stibbons notices that many animals are very similar to each other, particularly the skeletons amongst the vertebrate animals.
It was these sorts of similarities that cause many people through the centuries to propose that animals all had one evolutionary origin, but it was not until Darwin and Wallace proposed a mechanism that could explain how these changes took place that it became popular among scientist.
This would refer to Darwin's work in the Galapagos where he noted that many birds, particularly the finches, looked to have come from common stock, but their beaks were specialised for particular feeding habits.
