Ponmudi blamed for transport dept loss-Cities-NEWS-The Times of India   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
CHENNAI: Former Tamil Nadu Transport Minister K. Ponmudi came under severe attack for the total `cash loss' of Rs 675 crore during the whole of DMK regime (1996-2001), and several members including the Transport Minister R. Viswanathan said the huge cash loss was because of his `inept' handling of the department.
As there were protests from the DMK benches, Viswanathan and Finance Minister C. Ponnaiyan, intervened to say that the cash loss of the transport corporations reached a high of Rs 675 crore during the five-year DMK rule because of his `inept' handling of the department.
Ponmudi said though the `cash loss' started during the last year of the previous AIADMK rule, he had, on several occasions in the past, including in the assembly, clarified that the losses were due to diesel price increases and establishment cost escalation.
