The Greek Theory of Suffering   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The great patriarch Hippocrates taught 2400 years ago that disease was not only pathos, the symptoms of suffering, but also ponos, the toil involved in the fight to restore the state of health.
This is the strain that the pathological process places on the constitution and its energy reserves as it fights to restore the state of health.
Therefore, disease (pathos) is a manifestation of specific stress (pathogen) and general strain (ponos) on the constitution as it tries to restore health.

 Chapter 5
Moreover, both ponos and kamatos are used by the poet to designate the life-and-death struggles of heroes.
As with the word aethlos 'contest', with ponos and kamatos there is a collapsing of the distinction between the myth of the hero's struggle and the ritual of the athlete's competition.
For ponos, see, e.g., Pindar Pythian4.236 (exeponêsen, applying to Jason's task of ploughing with the bronze bulls); Pythian4.243 (the same); Pythian4.178 (the voyage of the Argo).

Do not grow weary brooding on your ordeal [ponos], but when you have come to the polis of Pallas, 80 sit yourself down and clasp in your arms the ancient wooden image of the goddess.
In a dream you are hunting your prey, and are barking like a dog after a scent, never leaving off the pursuit.
But I say that the man who boldly transgresses dikê and who does all sorts of evil things, 555 in time, he will surely trim his sails, when ordeals [ponos] break over him and the boom is splintered.

The Growing Edge Community - Is the word "hydroponics" Greek or Latin?
It is composed of the words “hydor” (not “hydro” as it is generally told) and “ponos.” The word ponos has two meanings when we consider the old and modern/popular Greek.
In the modern/popular Greek, ponos means a pain like a headache or a pain like your feeling when somebody near you dies.
In Old Greek, ponos means the result of the physical work of something or somebody over something, like the painting of a painter, the book written by a writer, or the result of the action of water or wind over soil.

Is the Sage Free from Pain?
Indeed, the distinction between ponos and lupê is fundamental for understanding the Stoics, even if they do not normally use ponos as a technical term but employ it somewhat informally to designate what we would call pain.
My thesis is that while the Stoics throughout antiquity believed that distress would be banished from the life of the sage, they did not hold the same view about pain.
This analysis reveals that the presence of physical pain is not a sufficient condition for distress; it is possible to avoid distress by having a firmly entrenched belief that the pain, though real enough, is of little or no weight on the scale of evils.

 Dialogue 18 background Notes
To be linked with the key word for the Dialogue on the Herakles of Euripides: âthlos (aethlos) 'contest, ordeal'; derivative word: âthlêtês 'athlete'; related concepts are agôn 'context, ordeal; competition' and ponos 'pain' [sharp, shooting pain] and kamatos 'pain' [dull, aching pain].

[82] The god then went back into the toil [ponos] and turmoil, but the soul of Hektor was darkened with a cloud of grief [akhos]; he looked along the ranks and saw Euphorbos lying on the ground with the blood still flowing from his wound, and Menelaos stripping him of his armor.
On this he made his way to the front like a flame of fire, clad in his gleaming armor, and crying with a loud voice.
Meanwhile Achilles did not know that he had fallen, for the fight was under the wall of Troy a long way off the ships.
