Two brief spells in the top flight of the Welsh League – in the early sixties and again in the early eighties – were all the club had to show for their efforts before finding themselves in the basement of the Welsh League.
Pontardawe stormed to the Third Division title in 1996, and set their sights firmly on the top division.
It was the turn of Pontardawe’s Youth team to impress during 1997, as the side won the Welsh Youth Cup and the National Youth League – the club’s emphasis on the youngsters merging together a fine team, and showing great prospects for the club’s future.

From 1830, Pontardawe developed coal, iron and steel industries which drove the Industrial Revolution and helped make South Wales the economic power it was for much of the 20th century.
The construction of the Swansea Canal, 1794-98, enabled the new industries to transport their goods, and although traffic on the canal all but ended in the 1930s, men were still working on the canal as late as 1950.

Pontardawe Pontardawe is a pretty town with a lengthy industrial history.
Its prosperity was initially based on the iron industry and to this it owes its bridge, designed by the William Edwards who was also responsible for the more famous bridge at Pontypridd.
John Newman in his Buildings of Glamorgan describes St Peter’s as ‘a model of Ecclesiological rectitude’ but admits that ‘the details, however, betray the recklessness of an inexperienced architect with plenty of money to spend.’ The town centre has been pedestrianised with attractive street furniture and the Swansea Canal is clean and well cared for.

For Generations, regulars at the Pontardawe Inn have known their favorite watering hole by its traditional name "Y Gwachel".
The Inn occupies the site of an older ale-house which stood on the old drovers' road leadings to the stone bridge from which Pontardawe derives its name (Bridge on the River Tawe).
The Inn was renovated in 1995 by the Pontardawe Festival Organisation (remember Bobs famous duck races?) and was then bought by Carol and Peter Clayton (remember Carol's Geese Henry and Gertie?).
