Pontarlier (pont means in French "bridge") is located on the river Doubs (in Latin Dubius, "dubious", because of its complicated course) close to the border with Switzerland.
Pontarlier was definitively incorporated to France in 1678 by the Treaty of Nijmegen.

Jerome Donnet had made a large ammount of money producing aircraft during World War I and in 1924 bought Automobiles Zedel of Pontarlier, Doubs, France.
A new car, the 1098 cc Type G was introduced in 1925 and it sold well helping Donnet to become France's fourth largest car maker in 1927.
The Type G was made in a former Donnet aircraft factory at Gennevillers, Seine and the Pontarlier works was sold in 1928 and the Zedel part of the name dropped.

In 1805, Pernod established his own distillery in Pontarlier, France, and enjoyed modest success until 1830 when the French invaded Algeria and the absinthe industry really took off.
During the Algier War in the 19th century France made use of the inciting effects of Absinthe and provided the Soldiers with regular rations of the liquor.
