Rooting Phylogenetic Trees with Distant Outgroups: A Case Study from the Commelinoid Monocots -- Graham et al. 19 (10): ...
Two of three branches not found across all most-parsimonious trees involve short branches in Pontederiaceae (not shown); a third (indicated with an arrow) involves two different arrangements near the base of the commelinoid monocot clade.
Bootstrap values are indicated beside branches but are excluded from all branches in Pontederiaceae, except for the two branches around the root.
Branch lengths for Pontederiaceae were calculated from the combined ndhF and rbcL data; the bars at each node show the minimum, average, and maximum branch lengths across the most-parsimonious reconstructions.

Stem-group Commelinales are dated to ca 114 mybp, divergence within the group to ca 110 mybp (Janssen and Bremer 2004); the corresponding dates in Wikström et al.
Pontederiaceae are aquatic or marsh plants - sometimes annuals - with sheathing leaf bases that are often differentiated into a petiole and blade with many parallel veins, the blade of the younger leaf then encircles the petiole of the older leaf.
Stem group Pontederiaceae are dated to ca 89 mybp, divergence within the crown group to ca 39 mybp (Janssen and Bremer 2004).

These two families are related to Pontederiaceae, and form the basis for the Pontederianae, a taxon I position between the Bromelianae and the Commelinanae.
These data position the Pontederiaceae basal to the Commelinaceae without the imposition of the zingibers between them.
Bremer and his associates refers the Pontederiaceae to the Commeliniales, then positions the Zingberales after that order, followed by the Poales.

Interpretive Summary: Nine new species of Thrypticus (Diptera, Dolichopodidae), associated with the aquatic plants of the Pontederiaceae family, were found in surveys conducted by the SABCL researchers in Parana-Paraguay basin and upper Amazon river.
Five of them were reared from water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes (Martius) Solms-Laubach which is originally from South America and became an invasive weed in the United States and many other countries around the world.
All nine species were reared from the petioles and stems of aquatic and semiaquatic Pontederiaceae, five of them from water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes.
