Pontefract (its name comes from the Latin for "Broken Bridge") is a town in the county of West Yorkshire, England, near the A1, or Great North Road, the M62 motorway and Castleford.
Pontefract is one of the few places in Britain where liquorice can be grown, due to the sandy nature of its soil.
Pontefract has a park with a racecourse on the outskirts of town, and nearer to the town centre is the very pretty Valley Gardens which has an aviary, and a fine avenue of flowering cherry trees that are well worth a visit in the springtime.

 Midland Main Line - Psychology Central
The Midland Main line was built in stages between the 1830s and the 1860s, as three lines which met at what was known as the Tri Junct Station in Derby.
First to arrive was the line built by the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway and its subsidiary the Stonebridge Railway from Hampton-in-Arden, Warwickshire, on the London and Birmingham Railway, to Derby.
The line was also once the Midland Railway's route from London St Pancras to Manchester, branching at Ambergate Junction along the Manchester, Buxton, Matlock and Midlands Junction Railway, now known as the Derwent Valley Line.

The Pontefract Line is the name given to one of the rail services in the West Yorkshire Metro area of northern England.
The Metro timetable for the Line also includes services operated as the Dearne Valley Line between York and Sheffield via Pontefract.
The Line, which passes through the former mining areas to the east of Wakefield and Castleford, has the greatest number of stations opened by the West Yorkshire Metro.
