Pontevedra is both a province and a provincial capital with a long, but sometimes questionable history.
Pontevedra was recognized in 1169 by King Ferdinand (II), who bestowed "charter" on the city, thereby giving it rights to trade as Galicia’s foremost port and to engage in the preparation and sale of fish related products.
On approaching Pontevedra, on one of the main routes, you apparently pass a large fish preparation/processing plant (I believe it produces fish oil) and the odour is apparently far from appealing.
