Pontiac Aztek - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pontiac Aztek, introduced late in the 2001 model year and produced through the 2005 model year, was a mid-size crossover SUV produced by the General Motors marque Pontiac.
The Aztek was able to carry within its interior the proverbial 4 feet by 8 feet sheet of plywood, a common and useful task most of its SUV competitors were unable to perform.
The styling of the Aztek was a source of great derision, to the extent that it was suggested that "Aztek" could become a replacement for "Edsel" as a synonym for failure in the modern lexicon.

The C.A.R. Show Review Page; 2001 Pontiac Aztek
The Pontiac Aztek GT was designed to attract younger buyers who enjoy the outdoors and want a vehicle to fit that lifestyle.
Overall, the 2001 Pontiac Aztek GT stirred up a lot of curiosity, but in the long run, I don’t think a lot of buyers will be that accepting.
I’m not sure if there is any real connection or not, but the 2001 Pontiac Aztek GT was assembled in Mexico and the name "Aztek" or "Aztec" represents a member of the Indian people who were dominant in Central Mexico in the year 1519.

Pontiac Aztek goes quietly, without eulogies | The San Diego Union-Tribune
Having accomplished the goal of provoking nonstop hilarity in the world's styling ateliers, the Pontiac Aztek – Road Kill magazine's sport futility vehicle of the year – will soon be even more invisible than it is now.
Among the general public, Aztek awareness is such that months and perhaps years might pass before the masses notice the void.
The styling studio's entire Aztek file appears to have been misplaced, but internal inquiries suggest that at the final presentation to top management, Pontiac's general manager thought she was looking at a vending machine, the head of styling thought he was hallucinating, and the chief engineer had a dental appointment.

Pontiac - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pontiac is a marque of automobile produced by General Motors and sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico from 1926 to the present.
The non-traditional Pontiac V8 was the 301 and the smaller displacement 265 in³.
Pontiac engines were not available in Canada, however, but were replaced with Chevrolet engines of similar size and power, resulting in such interesting and unusual (at least to American car fans) models as the Beaumont SD-396 with a Chevrolet big-block 396  in³ V8.

Onstar’s sole purpose is to allow frustrated Aztek owners a way to communicate instantly with the people who cause their frustration.
The Aztek’s traction is provided by all-wheel drive (a note to the off road enthusiast, this doesn’t mean 4 wheel drive.) With all-wheel drive, the Aztek can handle most smoothly paved suburban road surfaces, but the car quickly bogs down in potholes or off road.
Pontiac would be well advised to let this Aztek fade into history just like its civilization namesake, the Aztec.

The $21,445-$26,915 Aztek, which is basically a minivan with a pokey V-6 and available all-wheel-drive, reminds one of either a prop from a mid-1980s sci-fi movie starring Sly Stallone (Judge Dredd comes to mind) or a dumpster with wheels.
Another plus is the optionally available Versatrak all-wheel-drive system, which gives the Aztek the kind of on-road tractability that is functionally as useful under most real-world conditions as truck-style (and gas-hungry) 4x4 systems with low-speed transfer cases.
Taken in total, the Aztek is a neat vehicle, in terms of what it does, can do, and how affordable it is. But it's a weird-looking puppy.

On close study, we can make out Pontiac's "aggressive" theme in some of the exterior details, but there is no clear design principle behind this monster as you would find in, say, a PT Cruiser or a BMW 3-series.
GM has been roundly criticized (with good reason) for its quantities of cheap plastic bolted to the exterior of its hvehicles, and the Aztek proves that the General has no plans of stopping this theme.
