Pontiacs are ubiquitous in the Motor City, but the rest of the country is less interested in the marque.
Pontiac is hoping to change that with the G6 and has even ditched its best-selling nameplate-Grand Am-to make the point that this is a truly different Pontiac.
Despite Pontiac's claims of "a value proposition," the G6 is priced in lockstep with the Mazda and the Honda, at $21,300 for the base model and $23,925 for the GT.

2005-2006 Pontiac G6 V6 / G6 GT Review - Modern Racer - Auto Archive   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The Pontiac G6 is offered with a new 3.5-liter V-6 engine, rated at 200 horsepower and 220 lb.-ft. of torque — more standard power and torque than the base Audi A4 or BMW 3 Series, but less than the V6 equivalents of its Japanese midsize competitors.
Pontiac's latest yielded a pleasant ride, with comfortable seating in the front and adequate headroom throughout.
The G6 also gets better gas mileage than V6 versions of both the Mazda 6 and the Nissan Altima, with ratings of 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.

Inside Line: Full Test: 2005 Pontiac G6 - The All-New G6 Redefines Pontiac   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
By giving the Pontiac G6 a wheelbase equal to a Mercedes-Benz E-Class, GM was able to increase the car's passenger volume to match its midsize sedan competition.
Standard on the Pontiac G6 GT are antilock brakes and traction control, a typical combination found across the class.
Pontiac may be taking a huge step toward the future with the G6, but up against the Accord and Camry, which are better all-around packages with a solid reputation for reliability, the G6 GT reigns less a beauty queen and more the girl with the nice personality.

The G6 has some big shoes to fill here, especially against our test driver’s high-end vehicles, but since it was designed to surpass the best from Germany and Japan right from the beginning, the Pontiac’s sure to rise to the occasion.
Sure, our G6 guest testers are the kind of folks that just love to just get in their cars and drive, but we had a few focused exercises planned to get them familiar with the agility and strength of Pontiac’s latest performance car.
Pontiac has its ear to the ground on that issue and is planning to change the dials for the production cars that hit showrooms this fall.

 2005 Pontiac G6 - Review / Road Test
With the new G6, Pontiac has put a stake in the ground, challenging the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Mazda 6 to beat it on sheer value.
Initially, the Pontiac G6 is being launched as a sporty four-door sedan, available in SE and GT trim levels.
Pontiac says the car is designed with three major "torque rings" that add stiffness and strength without taking up too much space or adding weight.

 CanadianDriver: First Drive - 2005 Pontiac G6
The arrival of the Pontiac G6 later this month marks the end for the Grand Am and a name worn by a variety of quite different Pontiacs since 1973.
GM press material calls the new G6 "a game-changing car" for Pontiac, one that "emphasizes fresh design direction and renewed performance spirit." The name Grand Am is derived from the racing series by the same name and has, at times, been closely associated with Pontiac performance.
Pontiacs are traditionally more 'swoopy' than Chevys and the G6 is all curves where the Malibu is squared off, or lumpy, depending on your point of view.

But Pontiac is looking to shift the focus to the retail market with the G6, and is confident consumers will buy the new car without the support of heavy incentives.
Pontiac designers set out to address that issue with the G6, and the look is definitely more upscale.
To add to the pleasure of driving the G6, Pontiac is offering the Panoramic roof, a four-panel, electrically operated glass sunroof that yawns wide enough to let even rear-seat passengers share in the open-air experience.

Following in the footsteps of last year's Solstice, the G6 was created to take Pontiac to the next stage of its style evolution.

AMR Review: 2005 Pontiac G6 - Finally, Entry-Level Driving Excitement
The G6 replaces the aging (and not gracefully, at that) Grand Am, which limped through the past couple of years with mediocre engine choices and sub-par quality that relegated it to rental-fleet status.
Pontiac said that they used the Volkswagen Passat as inspiration for their new design, but the arcing roofline is really the only VW design cue that I can pick out.
With the current Pontiac Grand Prix and Bonneville still using downgrade materials for their interiors, one wouldn't expect the G6, which is positioned lower on the food chain than the aforementioned two vehicles, to display any better quality.

GM has so much riding on the G6 that its Pontiac division saw no problem giving Oprah 276 of them, with a combined retail value of over $7 million, hoping for a publicity bonanza to match the vehicle's outsize significance.
More significant, the G6 has a tasteful interior that is largely free of the cheap gimmickry GM has used in the past to entice buyers.
If Pontiac continues with clever vehicles like the G6, Oprah might be able to sell them to her fans next time, instead of giving them away.

For the Grand Am sedan's replacement, the 2005 four-door G6 sedan, Pontiac went to the corporate catalog and chose the stretched version of General Motor's global Epsilon platform that the Chevy Malibu Maxx is also based on.
G6 pricing puts it right smack dab in the middle of a plethora of other sporty, four-door family sedans.
Using the stretched Epsilon platform means the Pontiac G6 is just 68.6 millimetres longer than last year's Grand Am, yet its wheelbase is extended by 127.0 millimetres.

The Pontiac G6 is the replacement for the Pontiac Grand Am, which, if you looked in the dictionary, is pictured right next to the entry for "Rental Car." It was hard to find a more generic, more mediocre car than the Grand Am.
The G6 GT we drove is a case in point.
So if you find a G6 at a great price — if GM runs one of its bargain basement blowouts — you'll be getting a pretty nice car that's certainly easy enough to live with day in and day out.

Specifically, those who have undoubtedly made a good living by providing Pontiac with all manner of polymer pieces – large ribbed sections, bulbous fascias, etc. – that have become not merely characteristic of the brand, but seemingly self-caricatures.
The new key word at Pontiac with regard to the brand’s design approach is “athletic.” And when you think of a world-class athlete, you probably don’t imagine all kinds of extraneous attributes.
The interior, with leather trim and mesh flooring, smacks of the active lifestyle that Pontiac is supposed to represent.

Hi, I am interested in getting a G6 GT coupe and my question concerns the Monsoon stereo system that comes with it.
The only thing to keep in mind is that the aftermarket equipment would need to tie into the vehicles serial data system and so it had better work correctly because that same data bus is used to communicate a lot of important information required for vehicle operation.

It also could be equipped with the fuel-saving Displacement on Demand technology, which uses only half of the cylinders during routine driving conditions and automatically reactivates the other cylinders when the driver needs the engine's full power for situations such as accelerating or passing.

The G6 is the third production car to utilize General Motors' Epsilon platform, but most new car buyers will never see the family resemblance.
All body styles are suited for family duty, and the convertible is notable because of its retractable hardtop that can open or close in under 30 seconds with the touch of a button.
As with most Pontiacs, the G6 is heavy on style, but this time the styling is bold yet clean with none of the plastic cladding of Pontiacs past.

2005 Pontiac G6 GT - The Car Connection
The other big difference between the G6 and most of its rivals is the stretched wheelbase it rides on - 112.3 inches from the centerline of the front axle to the center line of the rear wheels.
The long-wheelbase design of the G6 also gives this new Pontiac "big car" ride quality and excellent handling, putting even more distance between itself and competitors that don't live large like the Accord and Camry.
Pontiac is finally living up to its sport-themed image with actual hardware - not just overly baroque body-cladding and a surplus of fake hood scoops, both of which are, thankfully, nowhere to be seen on the cleanly-styled G6.
