Pontypool (Welsh: Pont-y-pŵl) is a town of approximately 37,000 people in the traditional county of Monmouthshire, southern Wales.
It is situated on the Afon Llwyd river in the county borough of Torfaen.
Today Pontypool is regenerating itself and may be seen as a dormitory town for its neighbours Cwmbran and Newport.

The earliest record of trade in iron is in 1588, but it was developed chiefly in the beginning of the 18th century by the family of Hanbury, the proprietors of Pontypool Park.
Pontypool was formerly famed for its japanned goods, invented by Thomas Allwood, a native of Northampton, who settled in the town in the reign of Charles II., but the manufacture has long been transferred elsewhere.
On the south-east of Pontypool is the urban district of Panteg, including Griffithstown, with a population (1901) of 7484.

There is a long history of bands in Pontypool from the original Pontypool Military Band, which existed up to the 1950's and served in the first World War, to the prize winning Pontypool Silver Band which won, at its first attempt, the "Daily Mirror" Challenge Cup at Crystal Palace in the 1920's.
Mr Percy Brown was the next talented conductor who succeeded Mr.S.T. Roderick in 1929, having joined the band as a boy in 1910.Unfortunately, the band experienced increasing financial difficulties during the 1950's, which eventually led to its demise in 1957.
The photograph to the right shows forty-plus members of the Battalion Band during the 1900s.Their leader Mr.Roderick, who conducted the previous Pontypool Military Band.
