On April 3, 1860, the Pony Express was launched as a daring private carrier to improve the terrible U.S. Postal Service to California.
The first newspaper carried by Pony Express was a special light-weight edition of the St. Joseph Daily Gazette.
The fastest time recorded was in November, 1860, when Pony riders carried westward the news of Lincoln's election as president on the outside of a letter to the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, Colorado.

The prime objective of the Pony Express was to prove the feasibility of a year-round central route as an alternative to the secessionist-threatened southern route.
Whereas the pony rider of 1860 rode a section of about 75 miles and changed horses every 12 to 15 miles, reenactment riders cover a shorter segment of 3 to 5 miles and use their own horses, turning the mochila over at the end of their ride to the next rider.
As a result the Pony Express Trail follows the same track as the well-defined Oregon, California, and Mormon Pioneer Trails through Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming, then traces the Mormon Pioneer Trail and Salt Lake cutoff of the California Trail from Fort Bridger to Salt Lake City.

At least three decades before the Pony Express galloped into postal history, the "iron horse" made a formal appearance.
Although funds were appropriated a month before he left office in 1893, subsequent Postmasters General dragged their feet on inaugurating the new service so that it was 1896 before the first experimental rural delivery routes began in West Virginia, with carriers working out of post offices in Charlestown, Halltown, and Uvilla.
