 Wharfedale Poor Law Union and Workhouse
In 1818, the parishes of Wharfedale from Ilkley across to Collingham became members of a large Gilbert Union based at Carlton to the south of Leeds.

Otley's direct connection to the railway network closed in 1967, however, a regular bus service (967) runs from Menston station, which is on the Wharfedale Line from Leeds, Bradford and Ilkley, and the 653 bus service stops at Weeton station on the Harrogate Line from Leeds and Harrogate.
Otley and Wharfedale ward has a population of 24,000, and Otley itself has a population of 14,100, according to Census 2001.

The railway, before the Beeching axe, also connected to Addingham, Bolton Abbey, and Skipton to the west, and to Otley, Pool-in-Wharfedale, meeting the main Leeds to Harrogate line at Arthington.
Nearby villages are Denton, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Bolton Abbey, Middleton, Addingham, and Addingham Moorside.
The area around Ilkley has been continuously settled since at least the early Bronze Age, around 1800 BC; cup and ring markings, and swastika carvings dating to the period have been found on rock outcrops, and archaeological remains of dwellings are found on the moor.

Parakeets are building thriving colonies in parks and gardens.
Originally they flourished in suburbs where they relied on food in bird feeders, but they are now moving into the countryside and feeding on fruit, nuts, berries, seeds and tree buds.

This cache is to be found on the banks of the River Wharfe (and after heavy rain, in it) near to the village of Pool-in-Wharfedale.
The name originates from our son who used to call viaducts, via ducks which seemed rather apt in view of where the cache is placed.
The site also overlooks the Arthington viaduct, the second viaduct on the Leeds to Harrogate railway line.
