Pop's standards of what makes a well-constructed song still apply to much of rock, which strives for memorable tunes and clear sentiments; the tension between pop virtues (such as sophisticated chord structures and unusual melodic twists), and incantatory, formulaic blues elements animates much of the best rock, like that of the Beatles."
Pop includes "power pop" and "pop/rock," but is not limited to those.
Pop music can be based on any number of styles, including folk, country, punk, blues, reggae, garage rock, as well as many others.

Pop standard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It has been suggested that Classic pop be merged into this article or section.
The term pop standards refers to an American songwriting, arranging, and singing style that is widely considered as the high point of Western vocal popular music.
Over time, these distinctions have become less clear, but the term "traditional pop music" is used to include all three of the above classes, whereas "pop standards" is only the last.

Classic pop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The distinction between classic pop and the popular music of the aforementioned time period lies in an enduring appeal of the greatest of these songs, long after their time of being "chart hits," although methods for measuring commercial appeal changed greatly over the course of the twentieth century.
The greatest of the classic pop writers achieved this with regularity, although many classic pop standards, such as "Learning the Blues" by Dolores Silver, were their era's version of one hit wonders, written by individuals never again writing a song that eventually became considered a standard.
Arguably, the last of the great classic pop songwriters, using rock and roll instrumentation but with arrangements and compositions in the spirit of predecessors from the earlier era, are Burt Bacharach along with his partner Hal David.

POP REVIEW; Standards, Unstandard - New York Times
Boz Scaggs has always skated between the cracks of musical genres, from hard blues to folk-rock to the high-gloss pop-disco of his biggest hit, ''Lowdown.'' So it really shouldn't be surprising that he recently released a traditional pop-jazz album of songs like ''What's New'' and ''But Beautiful,'' recorded with a jazz quartet.
The very roughness of his voice lent his ballad singing a cragginess that suggested a lot of hard emotional gravel under the polished surface.
Scaggs and his quartet kicked the standards into gear with a steady rhythmic punch, his interpretations went against the grain of the words.

Most standards -- not all; some are pieces written by jazz composers -- started out as pop songs, numbers in Broadway musicals or movie soundtracks.
As the son of pop singer Sandy Stewart and Broadway composer "Moose" Charlap, who wrote the music for "Peter Pan," Bill Charlap saw important composers of popular music of the day visiting his Manhattan home.
Basically, it's a tune that is interesting to play, that we all enjoy and so it becomes part of the tradition," says Camilo, at 47 a young veteran who has seen a couple of his jazz pieces edge into the repertoire.

Standards and pop songs for wedding reception | Ask MetaFilter
Yet another wedding music question: my sister has asked me to help her out by compiling a list of "standards and pop songs" for the DJ to play at her wedding.
I'm clueless about standards and when I think of dj-friendly pop songs, I think of songs like Celebrate, Breakout and I've Had the Time of my Life (yeah, it's been a while since I've been to a wedding), and I don't think anyone wants to hear songs like that.
This is the sort of thing that the DJ is supposed to do, so other than high level guidance ('standards and pop songs but no country' for example) and any specific requests she might have, she shouldn't need to provide a ton of input.

The jazz singer Karrin Allyson is young enough to have fallen in love with 70's singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Elton John and Carly Simon while growing up, and she's sophisticated enough to envision their songs in a pop-jazz continuum that goes far beyond the soft-rock genre they helped define.
Her show intersperses them with vintage chestnuts, bossa nova and bebop in a program that changes from set to set.
It turns out the songs stand on their own and are surprisingly amenable to outside interpretation.

Manufacturers and shippers of hazardous materials must take a critical look at how their companies will deal with these new standards when they purchase packaging to be used in the transportation of hazardous materials.
This included the adoption of standards that could be used by all nations which based packaging not so much on design as the ability of a given package to pass performance tests.
Many argue that the real problem is not with performance-based standards but with the actual tests that do not, in the opinion of experienced companies, associations, and state agencies, adequately reflect a real-world transportation environment in the US.

 Alternative Pop/Rock - Standards The Alarm / CD / 1990
By the time the career retrospective Standards was released in late 1990, the band had already been somewhat forgotten, partially because they never had a big crossover hit, and also because they were forever tied to the Reagan/Thatcher era.
Consequently, the Alarm were relegated to also-ran status and nearly forgotten by anyone who didn't actively read the music press in the '80s -- not an entirely fair fate, yet not an entirely undeserved one either.
Listening to Standards, a thoroughly representative, basic collection of their singles and significant album tracks, confirms that the band were certainly not without talent or charms, but they suffered at the hands of state-of-the-art record production.

 Stop with the pop-ups! - Feb. 12, 2002
Difficult economic times and a sharp decline in online advertising spending have led to a huge proliferation of so-called "pop-up" ads, which cause a new window to open up on the computer's desktop when a user either first opens or tries to close a Web page.
Many of them have relaxed their standards, accepting pop-up ads where a year ago they would not have.
At the same time, Web surfers, who have become accustomed to an abundance of free, high-quality Internet content, have been barraged by pop-up ads, which without a broadband Internet connection and a high-end computer system often can slow a PC down to a crawl or even cause it to freeze.

Those standards are particularly interesting here, because Webber's most public statement involving the film version of The Phantom of the Opera has been that he holds extremely high standards for the vocals.
Minnie Driver does not perform her own operatic vocals (she's talented in a more modern pop sense, as heard in the new closing credits, but does not have the talent necessary for the role of Carlotta), but Carlotta vocalist Margaret Preece lacks the ability to sing with the convincing pompousness needed for the role.

The IAB's director of industry initiatives, Adam Gelles, described the meeting as the first step toward standards for pop-ups, which could include requirements such as the mandatory labeling of pop-up and pop-under ads served by sites, or the adoption of uniform frequency caps.
However, even Naylor cautioned that standards and frequency caps were unlikely to solve the pop-up problem, since sites outside the IAB, as well as adware companies, would continue to serve untargeted and uncapped pop-ups.
