Despite his successes, Tate was unhappy with how the music business was treating him in the early 1970s – Tate never saw a dime in royalties and felt like he was being taken advantage of – and soon decided to walk away from the industry and never look back.
Tate is now performing both in the U.S. and internationally with his eight-piece band and acoustic trio, and will be featured at the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival in September.
Tate is poised to take his rightful place as one of the world's great RandB luminaries as he continues with an inspirational career, approaching his seventh decade.

Tate released an album, Get It While You Can, that was regarded as a classic by aficionados, but which failed to sell in large quantities.
As Robert Christgau writes in his review of Tate's Verve material, "Tate is a blues-drenched Macon native who had the desire to head north and sounds it every time he gooses a lament with one of the trademark keens that signify the escape he never achieved.
Ragovoy and Tate reunited for the 1972 Atlantic Records Howard Tate, which included more songs by Ragovoy along with Tate's versions of Bob Dylan's "Girl from the North Country" and Robbie Robertson's and Levon Helm's "Jemima Surrender." Again, the album was acclaimed by critics and virtually ignored by listeners.

The other detriment that pops out is that much of the percussion comes across as artificial sounding and is too far up in the mix.
