Box Frenzy - Pop Will Eat Itself, Music Downloads - Online
Review: A hint (some might say warning) of what was to come on its follow-up record, the sample-heavy Box Frenzy is a fury of hip-hop, rock, and dance.
Pop Will Eat Itself had yet to fully develop their wildy eclectic sound and satirization of politics, so there's a few odd numbers here.
Among those is "Inside You," an innocent pop song that borders on cheesy new wave.

Bastard pop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bastard pop is a musical genre which, in its purest form, consists of the combination (usually by digital means) of the music from one song with the a cappella from another.
The name Pop Will Eat Itself was shamelessly stolen from an NME feature on the band Jamie Wednesday, written by David Quantick, which proposed the theory that because popular music simply recycles good ideas continuously, the perfect pop song could be written by [ combining ] the best of those ideas into one track.
Glitch pop is a subgenre of the bastard pop scene which marries the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) wizardry associated with Kid 606 and Tigerbeat6 records to the ostensibly familiar contours of pop.

 Pop Will Eat Itself
Now that pop music/rock n' roll has been around for more than forty years it has become almost impossible for it to retain its pre-eminence as the defining voice of youth culture and the driving force behind its (r)evolution.
That is why pop has been relegated to the playground of the pre-teens and the pre-pensioners.
After all this isn't the first time that pop music has had its back to the ropes and its seconds reaching for the towels even if it has possibly never been this close to failing to make the count.

Pop Will Eat Itself (PWEI) by name alone will deter people from picking up their great albums.
Upon further study of the album, you will find their political backing which roots their music deeply.
I think this means that PWEI, although distinctly unique, is still a group that will be great for an occasional setting but not worth keeping in your daily CD folder.

Pop Will Eat Itself began recording under the name 'Wild and Wondering' and released their first EP, '2000 Light Ales From Home' in January 1986.
By coincidence, the EP the label had been sent was credited to Pop Will Eat Itself.
In the five years that they were signed to RCA, Pop Will Eat Itself recorded a catalog of innovative and exciting music, however, it was their lack of chart success that let them down and they were thrown off the label in 1993.

His current single, a witty, clever, effortlessly catchy pop record featuring manufactured quintet Liberty X singing a cover of Chaka Khan's Ain't Nobody over music borrowed from the Human League's doomy debut single Being Boiled, is another huge hit - and now he has to promote it on the National Lottery television show.

This Wall Street Journal article (copied below the fold) about Asian pop music made me realize an obvious solution to the music industry's downloading woes: abandon the assumption that pop music is anything other than advertising and dissolve the music biz into the ad biz.
That's essentially what has happened in Asia, where pop hits are commissioned by cell-phone makers and fast food chains.

It shows the bands progression from an essentially guitar driven indie style band to their experimentation with the use of samples and drum loops, and the style with which they are best known for.

Yet they also slyly mocked consumerist excess, and it didn't take long for the rulers to catch on to their defiant game and ban certain songs, eventually running many of the musicians into exile.
