Che Guevara in popular culture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Che Guevara is a political figure, but also the focus of a pop culture following.
As Che Guevara has become well known, he has achieved a cult status and is an icon of revolution.
Guevara is also one of the characters portrayed in Monty Python's "World Forum" sketch, where Eric Idle hosts a game-show type program between Guevara, Mao Zedong, Vladimir Lenin and Karl Marx.

pop art - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about pop art   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
Pop art reflected the new wealth, consumerism, and light-hearted attitudes that followed the austerity of the post-war period.
The chief pioneers of US pop art were Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, both of whom used novel imagery; Johns, for example, made sculptures of beer cans (anticipating Andy Warhol's paintings of soup cans), and Rauschenberg incorporated photographs from glossy magazines in his collages.
Other leading US exponents of pop art included Roy Lichtenstein, who based his paintings on frames in comic strips, and Claes Oldenburg, who is perhaps the best-known sculptor in the movement; his works include giant sculptures of foodstuffs.

Pop icon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pop icon or pop idol is a celebrity whose popularity (hence, "pop") remains constant or even increases as time goes by.
The Pop idol is though a much broader definition than this, and acceleration of media has made Pop idols out of celebrities of many types.
Adoration of pop icons is due only in part to their actual accomplishments; the far more important factor is their apparent attainment of eternal youth.

1960s - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stimulated by this movement, but growing beyond it, the large numbers of student-age youth, beginning with the Free Speech Movement at the University of California, Berkeley in 1964, peaking in the riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois and reaching a climax with the shootings at Kent State University in 1970.
The overlapping, but somewhat different, movement of youth cultural radicalism manifested by the hippies and the counter-culture, whose emblematic moments were the Summer of Love in San Francisco in 1967 and the Woodstock Festival in 1969.
The rise of an alternative culture among affluent youth, creating a huge market for rock and blues music produced by drug-culture influenced bands such as The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane and The Doors, and also for radical music in the folk tradition pioneered by Bob Dylan.

Between Pop and Literature: Nick Hornby
Pop may be best described as a triangle of terms: Pop emerges in a fertile social field defined by art, commerce and folk traditions.
To some extent pop is always rooted in everyday life – you basically know the topics of pop lyrics, you know the sound of pop music, you know the images of pop icons.
Pop needs a certain degree of contemporariness, it evolves in the gap between the folk tradition of the past and the inventive creation of the present.

Should we love Che Guevara? By Paul Berman
Che was an enemy of freedom, and yet he has been erected into a symbol of freedom.
Che was a medical student in those days, and Granado a biochemist, and in real life, as in the movie, the two men spent a few weeks toiling as volunteers in a Peruvian leper colony.
Che is a hero to many because he resisted a truly ugly system, remained true to his ideals, and conveniently died before the Revolution's slow, pathetic demise became apparent to nearly everyone.

06/10/97 -- Features: Che! Pop Hero! Martyr! Icon of the Revolution!
On July 28, 1997 the skeletal remains of Ernesto "Che" Guevara were found in a common grave in Bolivia.
Guevara firmly believed that "the armed struggle is the only way for Latin America." This in part, as Daniel James claims, is part of Guevara's appeal: "Che moves us because Che is violence." His goal was the liberation of people living under the tyranny of exploitative governments.
While many of Guevara's fans criticize 'armchair revolutionaries', who are unwilling to act forcefully in the name of change, others question not only the legitimacy, but also the practicality of political violence.
