Pop Punk Encyclopedia Article @ HigherPower.org (Higher Power)
Pop Punk is a musical style which emerged at the on-set of punk rock in 1974 with America's counterpart of England's Sex Pistols and the Clash - The Ramones (who actually formed before the Sex Pistols or the Clash).
They were perceived as adding little-to-nothing to the pop punk sound that already existed and were criticised from certain quarters that viewed them as pure careerists, apeing a sound that had reached its conclusion years ago, purely to become rich and famous.
Pop punk is sometimes associated with the label Emo.

Punk rock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Punk rock was also a reaction against tendencies that had overtaken popular music in the 1970s, including what the punks saw as superficial "disco" music and bombastic forms of heavy metal, progressive rock and "arena rock." Punk also rejected the remnants of the hippie counterculture of the 1960s, despite being a product of it.
Punk rock in Britain coincided with the end of the era of post-war consensus politics that preceded the rise of Thatcherism, and nearly all British punk bands expressed an attitude of angry social alienation.
Gradually punk became more varied and less minimalist with bands such as The Clash incorporating other underground musical influences like ska and rockabilly and even jazz into their music, but the message of the music remained the same; it was subversive, counter-cultural, rebellious, politically incorrect and often anarchist.

 Pop Punk Owns You
Punk, since it started in the later sixties, has been building a diverse, meaningful counter culture, a revolutionary new place in society for those who feel left out and turned down by “the system.” Modern pop/bubblegum punk has failed to achieve that.
Nofx and several other bands introduced yet another styling of punk, a punk that emerged as a sort of reaction to the two extremes (being streetpunk and pop punk), a style on occasion referred to as skate punk.
Skate punk has shown to be the most diverse of the various genres of punk, as it started as a blending of two different styles of music and has continued on and on to add more and more.

Since hardcore mutated into speed metal in the late '80s, it wasn't surprising that these punk traditionalists were heavier than their initial influences, but that is partially what made the music appealing to a mass audience in America -- it was simpler and heavier, much like a faster, harder outgrowth of grunge rock.
Essentially, Punk Revival bands were all traditionalists -- they kept alive the sounds and styles of groups like the Sex Pistols, the Stooges, the Jam, the Exploited, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, the Descendents, and countless other punk and hardcore bands.

There's been poppy punk as long as there's been punk (The Ramones were one degree of twistedness away from Top 40 songwriting), but in terms of MODERN pop punk (Like Green Day, NFG, Blink, etc.) I'd look pretty closely at the Clash, Op Ivy, and a lot of SoCal type stuff.
