Pope’s on-base military family housing, now owned by the Air Force, will be turned over to a private company within the next two years under an Air Mobility Command-wide housing privatization program.
An added bonus for Pope is the addition of at least 264 housing units since Pope is one of the few bases in the United States with a housing deficit, said Jerrold Harrington, project manager of the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence at Brooks AFB, Texas.
Since military members will basically be paying rent for their base housing unit, they will have a choice of living there or moving downtown, so it will behoove the privatization company to build units that are as good or better than those on the local market.
