Pope St. Benedict II Date of birth unknown; died 8 May, 685; was a Roman, and the son of John.
Sent when young to the schola cantorum, he distinguished himself by his knowledge of the Scriptures and by his singing, and as a priest was remarkable for his humility, love of the poor, and generosity.
The most important source for the history of the first nine popes who bore the name of Benedict is the biographies in the Liber Pontificalis, of which the most useful edition is that of Duchesne, Le Liber Pontificalis (Paris, 1886-92), and the latest that of Mommsen, Gesta Pontif.

CNS STORY: Pope Benedict, influenced by Vatican II, can shape its implementation
Pope Benedict later called the modified Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation one of the outstanding texts of the council -- and one that has yet to be fully understood by the church.
In a more general sense, what troubled the future pope in the aftermath of the council was the impression that everything in the church was open to revision and that the secular world's political approach could be transferred to church decision-making.
To understand Vatican II correctly, he said, one must begin with the first sentence of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church: "Christ is the light of all nations." The point, he said, is that the church begins by talking about Christ, not about itself.

Last Benedict a peacemaker | Chicago Tribune
Pope Benedict XVI has not yet said why he chose the name, but some theologians speculated Tuesday that he may have been more inspired by the famous monk St. Benedict than by previous pontiffs with that moniker.
Though many of the popes named Benedict were among the least distinguished successors of St. Peter, experts noted that the most recent pontiff by that name tried to broker a peace treaty in World War I and may also have inspired Ratzinger's decision.
Several of the early Benedicts lived during a period of unrest in the church, when the papacy was contested at times by rival bishops.
