When Pope Gregory II (715-31) took office he was faced with the responsibility of managing the Church’s inheritances, and along with that duty came the responsibility of paying the imperial taxes.
Pope Gregory II not only ignored the decree, but he also sent a letter to the Emperor accusing him of inappropriately interfering in theological matters.
Pope Gregory III tried to diplomatically end the siege but was unable to so he sent emissaries to Charles Martel, the mayor and true power behind the Lombards.

On the death of the countess Matilda, who had bequeathed all her territories to the Church (1115), the emperor at once laid claim to them as imperial fiefs and forced the pope to flee from Rome.

Pope Nicholas II was a reform prelate and set controls for the election and conduct of popes by assembling a synod of 113 bishops on April 13, 1059 whose first order of business was to declare the election of Pope Benedict X unconstitutional.
Pope Nicholas II died in Florence on July 27, 1061, and was buried in the Cathedral of Santa Reparata now the Duomo.

Amongst the figures painted in the apse of the oratory built by Calixtus II in the Lateran Palace is that of Urban II with the words sanctus Urbanus secundus beneath it.
