pope innocent iii   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-28)
Pope Innocent III was a strenuous opponent of heresy.
Pope Innocent III called for the Fourth Crusade in 1198, directing the call towards the knights and nobles of Europe, rather than the kings (he preferred that neither Richard I of England and Philip II of France, who were still engaged in war, nor his German enemies, participate).
Pope Innocent III excommunicated the Venetians in return, and although he was not pleased with the means by which it was done, he accepted the end result of the temporary reunification of the Catholic and Orthodox churches after the Great Schism of 1054.

Innocent IX, né Gian Antonio Facchinetti de Nuce (July 22, 1519 - December 30, 1591), who was born to a modest working family in the mountainous comune of Cravegna, in the diocese of Novara, northern Italy, was a canon lawyer, diplomat, and chief administrator during the reign of Pope Gregory XIV.
The Cardinal, who was archbishop of Avignon, sent Facchinetti there as his ecclesiastical representative and subsequently recalled him to the management of his affairs at Parma, where he was acting governor of the city, from 1556-1558.
Mindful of the origin of his success, he supported, during his two months' pontificate, the cause of Philip II of Spain and the Catholic League against Henry IV of France in the civil Wars of Religion, where a papal army was in the field.

 Pope Innocent IX
Innocent IX, born Giovanni Antonio Fachinetti or Facchinetti in 1519.
He became cardinal in 1583; and under the invalid Pope Gregory XIV assumed almost the entire conduct of affairs.
His election to the papacy, on the 29th of October 1591, was brought about by Philip II, who profited little by it, however, inasmuch as Innocent soon succumbed to age and feebleness, dying on the 30th of December 1591.
