  Pope John XVII - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John XVII, né Sicco (died November 6, 1003), was a native of Rome who succeeded Silvester II as pope on June 13, 1003, but died less than five months later.
Pope John was nominated to the papacy by John Crescentius, a Roman noble who held power in the city in opposition to Otto III, Holy Roman Emperor.
The previous legitimate Pope John is generally considered to be John XV.

In 1008, after long negotiations with the Bishops of Würzburg and Eichstätt, who were to cede portions of their dioceses, the boundaries of the new diocese were defined, and Pope John XVIII granted the papal confirmation in the same year.
The new cathedral was consecrated May 6, 1012, and in 1017 Henry II founded on Mount St. Michael, near Bamberg, a Benedictine abbey for the training of the clergy.
Pope Benedict VIII during his visit to Bamberg (1020) placed the diocese in direct dependence on the Holy See.

John XVIII, né Fasanius (born at Rapagnano near Ascoli Piceno, died June 1009), the son of a Roman priest named Leo, was pope from 1003 to 1009, was, during his whole pontificate, allegedly subordinate to the head of the Crescentii clan who controlled Rome, the patricius (an aristocratic military leader) Johannes Crescentius III.
The period was disturbed by the conflicts between the Ottonian Emperor Henry II and Arduin of Ivrea, who had styled himself King of Italy.
He adjudicated a squabble between the abbot of Fleury and the bishops of Sens and Orléans.

The pope complained of this to the emperor, and called both bishops to his tribunal under threat of ecclesiastical censures for the entire kingdom.
According to one catalogue of popes, he died as a monk at St. Paul's near Rome in June, 1009.
