His Beatitude Peter (Petros) VII (September 3, 1949 – September 11, 2004) was the Eastern Orthodox Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa from 1997 to 2004.
Peter was born as Peter Papapetrou in Sichari, Kyrenia District, Cyprus.
Peter VII died along with 16 others (including three other bishops of the Church of Alexandria: Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Carthage, Metropolitan Irenaios of Pelusium, and Bishop Nectarios of Madagascar) when the helicopter carrying them crashed into the Aegean Sea while en route to the monastic enclave of Mount Athos in Greece.

Pope Peter VII called the bishops and the clergy and went with them to the banks of the river where he celebrated the Divine Liturgy and after the service he washed the Holy Service utensils with water from the river, then he threw the water and the blessed Kourbana (Blessed Bread) in the river.
The Pope accepted the invitation, and when he arrived, he was received with honor and reverence and he entered Jerusalem with a great procession and a splendid celebration, in which the governor, the rulers and the heads of the different Christian denominations participated.
The Pope refused the proposal graciously by asking: "Does your Caesar live forever?" When the envoy answered that he would die like all human beings, the Pope told him that he preferred the protector of the church would be her true shepherd, the King that does not die.

His Beatitude Petros VII, the 115th Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, who has died, aged 55, in a helicopter accident in the Aegean Sea, was the man widely believed to have been responsible for the resurgence of the Greek Orthodox Church in Africa.
He was elected Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa by the church synod in February 1997, following the death of Patriarch Parthenios III the previous year.
Petros believed the Middle East to be a sensitive region, and that a war would be seen as an attack against Islam.

On the night of Tuesday 11 May 2004, His Beatitude Petros VII Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa attended the official dinner which was hosted in his honour by Paul, Patriarch of Ethiopia at the Ethiopian Patriarchate.

I arrived at the Alexandrian Patriarchal Monastery of St Sabbas this Sunday morning for Liturgy excited about the prospect of possibly seeing the Patriarch Pope Petros VII of Alexandria and all Africa.
This is a major loss to the Alexandrian church who has kept the light of faith shining brightly in the midst of an Islamic country for centuries.
Please pray for the blessed repose of the beloved Pope Petros and the 10 Alexandrian priests, and the others who fell asleep in the crash.
