For the early popes the main written source is the "Liber Pontificalis." This account of the lives of the popes was begun probably early in the sixth century while the Ostrogoths ruled Italy.
This is one of several ordinances attributed to the early popes regarding the sacredness of the ceremonial vessels.
Pope Sylvester sent two legates to represent him Vitus and Vincentius, and it seems that it was the Pope who suggested the term consubstantial to describe the relation of Christ's nature to the Father.

A Roman and the son of one Abienus, Severinus was elected on the third day after the death of his predecessor, and envoys were at once sent to Constantinople, to obtain the confirmation of his election in October 638.
But the Emperor, instead of granting the confirmation, ordered Severinus to sign his Ecthesis, a Monothelite profession of faith.
When Severinus refused, he was kept out of the Papal See for almost two years.

Monothelism was condemned by the successors of Pope Honorius: Pope Severinus (640-640) formally condemned it, Pope John IV (640-642) and Pope Theodore I (642-649) excommunicated Pyrrhus, patriarch of Constantinople, for defending the same error.
The Ecumenical Council of Constantinople (680-681) condemned Monothelism and Pope Honorius as a heretic.

The task was difficult, for the emperor was determined to force his pet formula on the Pope, and of course, Severinus could not possibly sign it.
After over a year and a half, Severinus was consecrated, probably on May 28, 640.
