Popiel, legendary duke of Poland immediately prior to Siemowit; not of the Piast dynasty, but of an earlier one.
According to the chroniclers Gallus Anonymus, Jan Dlugosz and Marcin Kromer, as a consequence of bad rule he was banished from the capital of Gniezno and died eaten alive by mice (or rats) in a tower in the Kruszwica settlement.
