Review: EXQUISITE CORPSE by Poppy Z. Brite
Brite, Poppy Z. Simon and Schuster, 240 pp.
Brite may well lose fans this time, her superbly composed arias on the most disgusting forms of death and sloshy decay being likely to turn off many admirers of her previous torchlit searches through the caverns of hell.
Brite's first horror novel, LOST SOULS (1992), a high- intensity rock'n'roll epic about southern white trash vampires, gained much of its energy from parody and her over-the-top bloodlust.

 Poppy Z. Brite: A Retrospective
Brite here adds her usual emphasis on descriptive passages (in fact, one could say her prose is decadently descriptive) to the Crow series, yet morph her style enough to give readers the comic book-like action they are familiar with in the series.
Brite has also proven her mastery of the short fiction format, as she has produced several excellent short story collections, including Wormwood, which includes the short story that inspired Lost Souls, and Are You Loathsome Tonight.
The vampires in Brite's novel are born rather than made, and eat their way out of their mother's womb and discover their lust for blood around puberty.

Brite's lush horror prose style, in which every noun has an adjective, every kiss has a flavor, and every place has an entire perfumery of smells, is discarded here in favor of an omniscient voice which is crisp, witty, and casual in the way that can only be achieved with great care and skill.
Brite concentrates on the fascinating business of cooking and running a restaurant, on the kitchen camaraderie and the New Orleans restaurant scene, and on the sweetly companionable relationship between G-Man and Rickey.

Blogcritics.org: Book Review: Lost Souls, by Poppy Z. Brite
While Poppy Z. Brite is popular enough that I finally bought the novel to see what she could do with a full-length tale, (I'd read some short stories in anthologies and liked her style), I feel her writing is good enough that the audience should expand far beyond what it seems to be.

The plot is multi-layered and in another writer's hands might have been terribly difficult to follow - Poppy Z. Brite weaves each strand of story into a beautifully symmetrical braid by the end - nothing ever feels tossed in as a late fix, there are no veiled 'deus ex machina' moments.
