Bibliography on Party Politics in Peru, 1950-62
Peruvian party literature does exist mainly because Peru is the home of the Apristas (373) and their leader Haya de la Torre, one of the rare original political theorists of Latin America.
Until the ascendancy of the Popular Action Party (379) in the late 1950's, parties were dealt with primarily in terms of their relations with the Apristas.
Party code 379 did yeoman duty in covering material about the small but persistent Communist Party, the Movement Democratic Prado, the small personalistic parties of the right, and most important of all--Action Popular--the party of Fernando Belaunde Terry, who secured the Presidency in 1963.

Handbook of Texas Online: PEOPLE'S PARTY
The history of the People's party in Texas is of particular interest because the party benefited from a grass-roots communication structure developed by the largest state alliance organization in the country.
The party also proved inept in convincing the rank and file members to put aside their racial prejudices; when "faced [with] a choice between white supremacy and a Populist governor...they chose white supremacy." These election results also indicated a major vulnerability of third parties.
A third party must meet two challenges: it must convince the majority of voters that the reforms it is advocating are necessary, and it must convince them of the viability of the third-party challenge.

Institute for Social Ecology - Popular Politics vs. Party Politics
If the goal of "independent political action" is to gain "power," to "function effectively" as a means to "lobby" or "resolve" specific issues of practical importance, I have no doubt that the supporters of Jesse Jackson and his "Rainbow Coalition" have a workable formula.
But there is another kind of politics that we often ignore in the name of "electoral politics" or "independent political action" This type of politics includes extraparliamentary forms like peace and antinuclear groups, food cooperatives, communes, affinity groups, feminist, ethnic and religious organizations.
Such a politics is institutionalized not around a party structure, but genuine popular forms like neighborhood councils and assemblies, town meetings, local associations and citizens' initiative groups, as well as the countercultural forms that remain from the sixties.
