Ralph Nader presidential campaign, 2004 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1996 and 2000, Nader was the candidate of the Green Party; in the 2004 election, however, he ran as an independent candidate.
However, an effort is underway by the Populist Party of Maryland to field candidates for governor, other statewide seats and at the local level for the State Assembly, county and municipal positions in the 2005 and 2006 elections.
As of October 26, 2004, Nader was slated to appear on the ballot in 34 states and Washington, DC, and was definitely off the ballot in eight states (California, Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Virginia).

Third party (United States) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
And since the new party rarely seems to have the chance or prospect of electing its candidate for governor of a state or president of the country, the voter is inclined in advance to consider its entire ticket as hopeless.
Advocates of third parties generally object to the notion that votes are "taken away" by third parties, because the phrase "taken away" misleadingly suggests that the two major parties have a propriety ownership interest in voters' votes.
In 2004, fearful of Nader's potential as a so-called "spoiler" who might garner votes that would perhaps otherwise go to the Democratic ticket, Democratic Party operatives made a concerted effort in many states to keep Ralph Nader off the ballot and were successful in several states.

 Ballot Access News -- October 1, 2004
Everyone agreed that the petition to qualify the Populist Party had 10,000 valid signatures, except that the petitions were organized according to county of residence, and some voters had signed the wrong county sheet.
Nader has been a registered independent voter his entire life, but the objectors claimed that he is still "affiliated" with the Reform Party, since he accepted its nomination.
Unfortunately for the Libertarian Party, the law requires nominees of parties that nominate by primary to poll 1% of all the votes cast in the primaries of all parties, for that office.

Nader for President 2004 - SourceWatch
Nader for President 2004 is the campaign for consumer activist Ralph Nader in the 2004 United States Presidential election campaign.
Nader's campaign has also encountered organised opposition from the Democratic Party, which fears a repeat of the 2000 Presidential campaign where a very tight vote saw the Republican candidate George W. Bush win by the narrowest of margins.
The Nader campaign is appealing that decision, and had filed the few thousand signatures it had gathered for Independent status in case it had to argue in court for more time to gather signatures as a partial remedy for being denied its expected Reform Party ballot line.
