Henare Te Atua was an important leader in the community of Ngati Kere and other hapu at Porangahau in southern Hawke's Bay in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, where he succeeded to the authority of Henare Matua.
By 1886 Henare Te Atua was living at Porangahau, where he was known as 'The Ringatu', being the last (and perhaps the only) minister of the Ringatu section of the community.
By 1902 Te Atua was chairman of the Porangahau marae committee.

After the family moved to Plymouth he met his sister's future husband, E. Eyre, lieutenant governor designate of New Zealand's southern province of New Munster, and sailed on the Ralph Bernal in 1847 to become Eyre's confidential clerk in 1848 and also, in the following year, his private secretary and clerk of the Executive Council.
After trying to make a quick fortune on the Australian goldfields he leased land at Porangahau and drove his stock north.
Such leases from Maori owners were illegal, but his 'very existence itself was at stake and there is no knowing what a man will do when fighting for his all.' After the government purchased the Porangahau block in 1857, he acquired by Crown grant a property of 19,075 acres, which he named Wallingford.

In those days, you were considered mad to try and make a living out of what was considered little more than a lifestyle block.
So he and Mum - they'd gotten married in 1939 when he was on final leave - worked on farms around Te Puke, before purchasing their little farm up Ugly Hill Road, halfway between Waipukurau and Porangahau.

Called in at Porangahau Estuary on my way north for the Tolaga Bay Pelagic to see if the sanderling first seen there on 16 Feb 2003 was still present.
The weather was not good, with probably the first rain this drought stricken area had had in who knows how many months steadily falling and a very cold southerly wind blowing.
