Porbandar, May 02, 2006: More than 5000 people in Porbandar came together to support ‘Vhali’ the whale shark as their pride symbol and pledged for its protection at a rally jointly organized by the Forest Department and the district collectorate in Porbandar on April 28.
At 5 pm, the 45 feet long inflatable whale shark was mounted on two camel carts which was closely followed by 5000 participants upto the Sudama Chowk in the heart of the city.
This campaign yielded good support from all sections of the society and many cities – Porbandar, Diu, Dwarka, Okha and Ahmedabad adopted the whale shark as their city mascot.

An alleged aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and the key accused in the landing of RDX and arms in 1993 has been acquitted in an Arms Act case by a court in Gujarat's Porbandar district.
These pistols were allegedly part of a huge quantity of RDX and arms that was landed on the Gosabara coast of Porbandar in 1993 and used in the serial blasts in Mumbai later the same year.

AHMEDABAD, June 19: The first-ever assessment of damage to port structures at Porbandar, Jamnagar-Bedi, Okha and Navlakhi in Gujarat during the recent cyclone has been put at Rs 100 crore and that to commodities lying in the vessels another Rs 50 crore to Rs 75 crore.
Kailasnathan said the western-most port of Okha in Jamnagar district was also damaged but the extent of harm was comparatively less.
As far as the all-weather port at Navlakhi in Rajkot district is concerned, the damage is complete.
