Topic: Porcine

  United States Patent Application: 0020031497
A porcine mesencephalic cell, which, in unmodified form, has at least one antigen on the cell surface which is capable of stimulating an immune response against the cell in a xenogeneic subject, wherein the antigen on the cell surface is altered to inhibit rejection of the cell when introduced into the xenogeneic subject.
The porcine mesencephalic cell of claim 2, which is contacted prior to transplantation into a xenogeneic subject with at least one anti-MHC class I antibody, or fragment or derivative thereof, which binds to the MHC class I antigen on the cell surface but does not activate complement or induce lysis of the cell.
Methods for isolating porcine neural cells from such a pig, in which the pig is tested for the presence or absence of organisms which are capable of transmitting infection or disease to a recipient of the cells, and neural cells isolated, are also within the scope of this invention.

Diabetes: Function, mass, and replication of porcine and rat islets transplanted into diabetic nude mice   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Although [beta]-cell mass of porcine and rat grafts was similar at all time periods, recipients of porcine islets required a significantly longer time to reach normal glucose levels; nonetheless, their blood glucose levels continue to decrease and stabilized at levels significantly lower than those of normal mice.
Porcine insulin is similar to human insulin, and diabetic patients have been treated with it for decades.
Porcine pancreases were obtained from a local slaughterhouse; female Yorkshire pigs 18--24 months of age (weight 350--450 pounds) were used as organ donors.

The Islet Foundation - Expression of PERV by porcine endothelial cells
However, excretion of porcine C-peptide by four patients up to 450 days after the transplantation combined with the finding of porcine mitochondrial sequences in serum for 6 months to one year in four patients argue for extended graft survival in at least five patients.
Porcine DNA was not detected in the circulation of either patient by any primer pair, even in samples taken only 6 h after dialysis (table).
The absence of porcine cells from the circulation of both patients suggests that any porcine cells, probably passenger lymphocytes, that were dislodged from the kidney were rapidly sequestered from the circulation.

 Porcine Somatotropin pST
Porcine somatotropin, abbreviated as pST, is a growth hormone naturally produced in pigs.
The word "porcine" refers to pigs, and the word "somatotropin" means body growth and refers to the name of the hormone.
Porcine somatotropin is active only in pigs and not in humans, cattle, etc. Since it is a protein, pST is digested and made inactive when it is eaten.

Cloning of Porcine CD80 and characterization of human T cell costimulatory activity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Porcine CD80 was found to be upregulated at 72 hours on lymphocytes upon stimulation with E.
To test this, the porcine CD80 gene was then transfected into COS cells to test for cross reactivity and function.
When considered with previous findings from this laboratory that porcine endothelial cells can be induced to upregulate the B7's by exposure to human T and NK cells suggests that porcine B7's may play a role in the human anti-porcine cellular response.
