Porco and Gina have known each other for a long time; on a wall of the club there is a picture of the young Gina, Porco in his human form, and three of his comrades on a plane, the Adriano.
One day, when Porco is on his way to Milan to have his seaplane repaired, he is shot down by Curtis, who has now been hired by the pirates and is eager to make his name as the champion pilot of the Adriatic.
Porco Rosso is one of the few movies directed by Hayao Miyazaki in which the historical and geographical settings are clearly defined, and where most of the story could have happened in the real world.

Porco Rosso for instance, the tale of a guilt-plagued aviator who has turned into a reclusive pig but continues to patrol the skies against a pirate menace, has to the best of my knowledge received a theatrical release in only one foreign territory, namely France (where Jean Reno provided the voice for the eponymous hero).
Porco Rosso is a fantasy tale that's lyrical to the point of being naive.
In Porco Rosso, Miyazaki doesn't criticise us for what we're doing wrong, but instead shows us how valuable and wonderful it is to be A) alive and B) human.

Porco Rosso, another "canon" classic from Studio Ghibli, somewhat bucks the trend of the majority of director Hayao Miyazaki's other films, in that it feature a male character as the main protagonist.

Porco's voicework is incredibly well-performed, and this is in no small part due to the talent that Disney obtained for this film.

The character of Porco Rosso is symbolic of just about every middleage man out there and is a very interesting study; his miserly, subdued outlook on life helps make him an unpredictable core to this film.
If you are familiar with most of Miyazaki's earlier works, it is easy to realize Porco Rosso is an anime this legendary director has longed to do for a lifetime.
