Il Pordenone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He was commonly named Il Pordenone from having been born in 1483 at Corticelli, a village near Pordenone in Friuli.
As a painter Pordenone was a scholar of Pellegrino da S. Daniele, but a leading influence of his style was Giorgione; the popular story that he was a fellow-pupil with Titian under Giovanni Bellini is false.
Pordenone appears to have been a vehement self-asserting man, to which his style as a painter corresponds.

Report on the 22nd Pordenone Silent Film Festival
Pordenone screened the 1929 condensed feature-length version (Bologna showed the serial version this past June), which cuts the original down from 8,800 meters to 3,200, although the running time is still 159 minutes.
Pordenone screened Surrender in 1989; it is to be regretted that they stuck to their rule of not showing anything twice, as a proper study of Mozhukhin's career requires a look at this tragic debacle.
Pordenone boasts the world's top accompanists, musicians who are keenly sensitive to the nuances of the medium and understand the role of the accompanist as someone who guides the viewer and gently augments the on-screen proceedings, rather than drawing attention to themselves.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Giovanni Antonio Pordenone
Most of the information respecting him is derived from Carlo Ridolfi, who states that Pordenone's first commission was given him by a grocer in his native town, to try his boast that he could paint a picture as the priest commenced High Mass, and complete it by the time Mass was over.
Most of his early work is to be found in the form of fresco decoration in the churches around Pordenone, where he spent most of his time.
At the present day, to understand his painting, it is necessary to visit the various churches round Pordenone, as the quality of his workmanship cannot be appreciated from the few frescoes which remain in Venice, nor from the small number of easel pictures which can be attributed to him with any definite authority.

 Brush with greatness
"Pordenone [1483-1539] is not very well known in this country, but he was quite successful in his time," said Charles Cohen, Professor in Art History and author of the new two-volume work The Art of Giovanni Antonio da Pordenone: Between Dialect and Language, published by Cambridge Press.
Pordenone also was something of an itinerant artist, fitting his style to the locale where he was working and creating frescoes that would complement the works of other artists in the same chapel.
While other art historians have studied and published works on various aspects of Pordenone's work, The Art of Giovanni Antonio da Pordenone is the most comprehensive study of the artistic, cultural and psychological whole of the artist.
